 Making Wall Mounted Night Stands

Turning a regular free standing table into a pair of wall mounted night stands
is a simple project that can help to enhance the beauty and function of your
bedroom. You will need a table saw, a tape measure or meter stick, some sand
paper, hammer, nails, screws, screw gun, a few pieces of 1x2 wood strips, and
some stain and sealer if you plan on refinishing the piece.

- You start by measuring everything, the wall, the table, and the bed, and then
determining how tall you want the night stand to be, and how far away from the
bed.

- If necessary, slice the legs down so that the table is the exact height that
you need. When doing so however you have to be very careful with your
measurements, so that the legs end up coming out even. If necessary, sandpaper
can be used to even the heights.

- Next determine how much surface area you want on the eventual night stand, and
trace a line across the top of the table accordingly. If you cut the table
perfectly in half, or want two tables which are each smaller than half the total
width of the original piece, you can actually build a pair of night stands.
Otherwise you can just build one, extra long piece.

- Lay the piece down on your table saw, and line the blade up with the line you
draw. Be careful and precise, as you will only have one chance at this. Then
slice the table as cleanly and neatly in half as you possibly can. If necessary,
go back and trim off any excess wood that you may need to.

- At this point if the table is unstained, or is in need of a new finish, you
will want to sand down the entire piece until the wood is clean, clear, and
porous. Wipe the surface down with a damp cloth to remove excess sawdust, and
then apply either a staining agent, or an even coat of paint. Apply as many
coats as you like, then once they are dry, seal it with a protective agent such
as polyurethane.

- Measure the back edge of the table where you sawed it in half. Then cut two
pieces of 1X2 wood to about one inch smaller than that length. Next take the two
wooden strips and nail them together so that they form a ninety degree angle
that resembles a capital L.

- Place the table with its cut edge up against the wall in the exact position
that you want to install it, with the legs touching firmly on the ground. Then
mark a line in pencil on the wall, along the underside of the table. Be sure to
note where the edges of the table are so that you can fit your wooden shelf in
precisely.

- Take the wooden shelf you created from the two strips of 1X2 and screw that
into the wall, with the top situated up against the bottom of the pencil line
you drew, and the upper part of the “shelf” jutting out.

- Finally place the table against the wall resting on the shelf, and attach it
to the wood by screwing upwards, through the shelf, into the wood of the piece.
At this point you should have a fully installed wall mounted night stand.
