The Elements of Tuscan Style Decorating

Tuscan Style Decorating

The Tuscan style is named because it draws its decorative characteristics from the Tuscany region of Italy. This famous pastoral area is known for having a variety of particularly attractive natural features, as well as a rich history and heritage. By using Tuscan elements in your home you can create a space which is full of both warmth and depth.
The following are the basic elements of Tuscan decorating:

Natural Elements: Nature is very important in a Tuscan decorating style. You want to use materials that are natural to the region. This includes a variety of natural stones such as Marble, Slate, and Limestone. The use of hardwood is also popular in Tuscan decors.

Wrought Iron: This is a material that humanity has wielded for thousands of years. It is simple, basic, and rustic, making it perfect for Tuscan style decorating. You will most often find this in furnishings such as bistro tables and benches.

Subdued Walls: Most Tuscan style interiors feature walls paints a soft white or gray. In some cases natural hardwood will be left exposed, or natural stone veneers can be used. These are then contrasted with the following colors found in accessories throughout the space.

Colors: Tuscan style is dominated by earth tones, browns, tan tones, and golden hues. Red can also be used to add history or luxury to a space. Blues and greens are then used to contrast in accent points.

The Great Outdoors: A Tuscan home will feature outdoor areas such as patios and lawns. These can be populated with wood, stone, and iron furnishings which can be matched in the interior.

Flooring: Tuscan floors are usually either wide plank hardwood or natural stone. This can be accented with rugs featuring the standard Tuscan color scheme above.

Art: Finding artwork which portrays the Tuscany landscape, or which is done by local Tuscany artists can be a great way to make the space feel really authentic.

Water: Running water is another common Tuscan theme, and many homes will feature a fountain with real running water displayed in a high traffic area such as a living room or major hallway.
