So have I, and just when you think your room is completely decorated you look at those drapes and say " They just don't fit!" and " It feels like a rental." TAKE DOWN THE UGLY window treatments ! You can remove the drapes and rods, store them in a safe place that is hidden from view and get looking for replacement window coverings and hardware (if necessary).
You may need to check with your landlord about the outside appearance of your home. If you want to buy blue window treatments and it shows through to the outside as the only window that is a different color, you may run into trouble. The way around that is to hang sheers that match the back of your old curtains to show on the outside of the building. The window hardware can range in price from free to hundreds of dollars. Consider the holes that are already in the walls being aware that if you need to make new ones it could affect your deposit refund in the long run. Know your budget, and remember whatever you purchase goes with you ! There are some beautiful pieces of hardware and drapery available in every style imaginable. If you are working on a tight budget you may get creative - I have seen some wonderful uses for fishing line and even baseball bats !
